To the editor:
The Board of Visitors of Mary Washington College will recommend to the Virginia General Assembly that the college name be changed to Washington-Monroe College in Virginia. This proposed change of name will be presented in January 1986. Until the name change is passed through both houses of the General Assembly, this is not a dead issue. The Administration and the Board of Visitors have led us to believe that the name change is supported by the majority of the alumni, faculty and students. Additonally, they have said that any opposition will be harmful to the future of the college. None of the facts so far presented support either of these agruments.
The decision to change the name was based on biased surveys prefaced with a letter titled “Image and Excellence” which was slanted to make anyone who disagreed with the name changed appear to want the college to shut its doors. This letter contended that to achieve the standards of academic excellence the college administration wants it must has full coeducation, implying that without it they will not attract the desired type of student. The letter went on to state that high school seniors and guidance departments do not even recognize the name Mary Washington College.
