Russians did not defect in order to play hockey, or soccer, or to join the international ski circuit. Such defections were more likely among lesser communist and communist satellite nations.
The second level of spies and informers seemed to be marked especially by the British. In this level the motivation for the passing over of information were usually, or certainly very often, found to involve homo/ sexual relationships. These relationships seemed to move the persons involved to rise about patriotic restraints.
Third-class countries might produce spies moved by the more acceptable sexual attractions in the heterosexual order, while fourthclass countries’ spies and informers were moved by crass financial and materialistic considerations. The old standards no longer hold.
Russians now defect for material considerations, even for money, which may not be paid to them by government directly, but realized through advances and royalties on books, and what they may be paid by the news media for public appearances. Defectors, like hostages, or former hostages, are quickly sought out by agents.
