The rash of spies, informers, defectors, and other varieties of traitors that have been publicly exposed in recent weeks and months is, if judged by the classical standards by which operators in this field have traditionally been judged, a rather common and motley lot. There are the slight exceptions of Larry WuTai Chin and the Soviet lover of Yurchenko, who bear marks of distinction — Chin because his reticence and strong loyalty to the Chinese lend a touch of class to his drama, and the latter because her sense, qf[ honor and propriety led her to the most dramatic of all forms of expression, suicide.
In the period surrounding World War II, there were standards to which spies, informers, and defectors conformed. If the espionage involved a first class power such as the United States, the spy would be expected to be moved by high ideological motives such as universal and perpetual peace, or, on the negative side, saving the world through mutual assured destruction, thus not letting one side or the other get a destruction advantage.
Russians who defected dining this period usually gave a more limited ideological justification, and were more likely to make their case of personal rejection of life in Russia, and of the inhibitions placed on their artistic expression. This was especially true of ballet dancers and musicians, and an occasional poet.
