CMDR. WELLING
Commander David Craig Welling relieved Commander C. G. Mendenhall III during change of command ceremonies for the USS Alexander Hamilton (SSBN 617) held topside October 14 at the Naval Weapons Station in Charleston, South Carolina. The Alexander Hamilton, a nuclear fleet ballistic missile submarine, was on a brief visit to Charleston enroute to Puget Sound, Washington.
Commander Welling returns to the Hamilton for his second assignment, having served as Engineering Officer from 1978-1981. Previous tours of duty have included a total of eleven strategic deterrent patrols aboard the submarines USS James Madison (SSBN 627) (BLUE) and Hamilton, interspersed by assignments to the staff of the Nuclear Power Training Unit in Ballston ' Spa, New York and the staff of Commander, US Atlantic Fleet in Norfolk, Va. Immediately preceding his assumption of command, Commander Welling served as Executive Officer of the nuclear fast attack submarine USS Archerfish (SSN 678) which completed overhaul and operations in the North Atlantic during his assignment.
A 1971 graduate of the United States Naval Academy, Commander Welling holds a Master of Business Administration degree from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He has been awarded the Meritorious Service Medal, the Navy Commendation Medal, the Meritorious Unit Commendation ribbon, the Navy Expeditionary Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and the Sea Service ribbon (five awards).
Commander Welling is married to the former Carter Moffett of Washington, Va. and is the son-inlaw of Mrs. William F. Moffett Jr., also of Washington. The Wellings, with their three children, Judith, Anne and David, currently make their home in Gales Ferry, CT, pending a change of residence to Bremerton, Washington.
