Along with Karan Rodgers, who teaches kindergarten age children, she has devised some unique programs to teach young children basic concepts. “Ghostbusters” is an example of a project in economics. Two years ago, in a group discussion, I asked the children “Where does money come from?” “From daddy’s pocket,” volunteered a fouryear-old. “From the bank,” a more experienced voice offered.” The next day we began our economics program.
i arned the value of moneyruslng real coins, not pictures or cardboard. “Make 25 cents by using three coins,” we’ll ask. Yes! They can do it! The children learn to county by fives and 10s. They add, subtract and reason by meeting the challenge.
A store is opened that “sells” real products: tuna fish, socks and notebook paper, to name a few items. The stock is marked at its actual retail price and is purchased with American coins. We have had kindergarten students purchase three items at a time - which requires adding three two-digit numbers, counting out money well in excess of $2 and figuring the change.
During this time coins from other countries are displayed. We discuss the making of coins and the Federal Reserve System.
The children bring to class items made in foreign countries: a teddy bear, watches, food. We locate the producing country on our map and discuss the climate, people and geography of the area. Then we speculate on how the item arrived in the United States. “Would you transport a snowmobile made in Canada by airplane? Would you sell it in Florida?” are among the questions
