Common trade names of prod- 1 ucts using dinoseb as an active ingredient include Dynanap, Premerge, Dinitro, Caldon, Sinox, DNBP, Vertac General, Selective Weed Killer, DNOSBP, Basanite, Klean Krop, Chemsect, Dynamite, Dinitrex, Hel-Fire, Kiloseb, Nitropone C, and Subitex.
Although the loss of dinoseb, which has been used on Virginia farms for more than 25 years, will have differing impact on various crops, all growers will feel some common effects, said Mr. Weaver. “Everyone will be losing a cheap herbicide and, when there are alternatives, they will be much more expensive.”
Where no alternative exists, lower crop yields become a real possibility because of competitive weeds. In addition, farmers will be stuck with existing supplies of dinoseb and face costly methods of legal disposal.
According to Mr. Weaver, the only legal method to dispose of the chemical is to hire a professional waste-management firm to come in and haul it away.
Mr. Weaver added that local Extension offices can provide information on licensed disposal firms.
