become a property of the husband the minute they are married. They obey only their husbands and the elders of his family. Even though there are divorces that do occur every now and then, the average Korean woman who has an unhappy marriage just endures the situation and lives with her husband until she dies.
To do anything outside of what society demands results in the woman “losing face”. A girl who gets pregnant before she is married would rather die than face her parents, peers and society. Many times, that is exactly what she will do: kill herself. Suicide in Korea is very common. It is all a part of the way Koreans think and live.
Many of these things seem outrageous, but by meeting the people and seeing them, I can understand why they have to think this way. Even though this is not the way I was brought up, I have accepted that this is the way my parents, friends and ancestors were brought up, and is what makes the Korean people what they are.
Even though I don’t know all that I would like to know about my homeland, what I do know of it makes me proud to be a Korean. I will always be a Korean, but part of me will always be an American. This is where I have become what I am now and this is the country that has given me a bright new chance at the kind of life I wanted and still want. Going to Korea gave me the ability to understand who I was then, who I am now and who I want to be in the future.
But coming back to America has given me the chance to put all of this into action. Besides coming back for that reason, I’m just glad to be back to my friends and family — maybe not my biological family, but the family (and friends) that I have grown up with and remember and thank.
