tions, mostly with the kids I had grown up with. They were very inquisitive about America and its customs. I had many arguments with them trying to defend the U. S. while still trying to be on the Korean side.
I found that many of them had misconceptions about the U. S. They thought of Americans as care-free, fun-loving, partying, shallow people who had huge houses, a couple of cars and a lot of money. Some of that is true, but then there are the other Americans who, besides the difference in customs, are very much like Koreans. After all, even though they have different customs, people are the same all over the world.
Trying to tell this to my friends, however, was like talking to a brick wall. I hope that now they understand Americans better. While they learned a lot of new things from me, I learned a lot from them.
America and Korea are extremely different when it comes to schooling, private home-life, elders and boy-girl relationships. While talking to my friends, I found out about their school system.
