The winter sports season is underway, with the boys’ basketball team playing at Rappahannock County High School. In January, the girls’ volleyball team and the eighthgrade boys’ basketball teams will begin their seasons. Games scheduled for the coming weeks are as follows: Boys’ basketball
Thursday, Dec. 15: Central at RCHS. This date has been scheduled due to conflicts because of high school football post-season play.
Friday, Dec. 16: No game. Page County at Page will be rescheduled to Feb. 15. Junior Varsity games begin at 6 p.m., with Varsity contests following immediately afterward.

Annual bird
count Dec. 18
The annual Audubon Christmas Bird Count, sponsored by Shenandoah National Park and the Shenandoah Natural History Association, will be held in the Luray area for the 20th consecutive year on Sunday, Dec. 18.
Count compiler, Park Naturalist Terry Lindsay, reports that the count will again be centered on Hershberger Hill near Stanley and cover an area of roughly 177 square miles within Page County.
Since the count began in 1969, more than 120 species of birds have been recorded, with 87 species seen in 1987. The count area contains a variety of habitats, ranging from the Shenandoah River to Hawksbill Peak elevation (4,050 feet) in the Park. The area is divided into 11 sections and for each section an experienced watcher is designated as coordinator.
Apart from its attraction as a social and sporting event, the annual Christmas Bird Count reveals interesting and scientifically useful information on the early-winter distribution patterns of various species of our winter resident birds — where they are and in what numbers.
A pre-count orientation meeting will be held at Shenandoah National Park Headquarters at 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 14. Park Naturalist Lindsay will show slides of birds expected to be seen on the count and will even have live birds of prey to show participants close up, to help make identification easier. During this meeting, new birders will be assigned to sections with more experienced birders.
Anyone interested in helping with the Bird Count either by assisting with' a section or just keeping track of birds within the count area at their backyard feeders, are invited to attend.
