Magnesium supplementation
With the lush pasture that we have seen in many areas of the state after good rains this fall, the danger of grass tetany, particularly for cows that have calved is a real concern. Be sure tljat such cows are given magnesium supplementation in blocks, mineral mixes or in the feed.
Plan winter lice control
New Year’s Day seems a long way off but mark it on your calender and plan to put your mid-winter lice control on cows and feeder cattle about that time. If they have been treated with a grubicide pour-on, spot-on, or with Ivomec, they can be treated with any similar material in mid-winter. If not, use Lysoff or Dursban 44. Follow label directions.
Lice are very costly parasites and with current values of cattle we can’t afford to let them rob us of pounds and profit. Control them.
Staunton and blackstone bull sales
Fifty to 60 service-age bulls of the Angus, Polled Hereford, Simmenatl, and Charolais breeds will be offered at Augusta Expoland at Staunton on Saturday, Dec. 3. In addition to the bulls, there will be 50 bred commercial heifers offered in the same sale. Then on Dec. 9, 35 service-age, performance-tested bulls will be offered for sale at the Southside Livestock Market at Blackstone at 6:30 p.m. with the same breed mix.
