Obviously buoyed by the enthusiasm of a near-capacity crowd at their first game in the new Rappahannock gym, the Panthers easily defeated the Clarke County Eagles in their home opener on Dec. 8.
In a game where they never relinquished the lead, 11 Rappahannock players contributed to the offense. Point man Eric Dunn led the attack with 18 points, including several which he slammed home off the fast break.
Anthony Porter paced both the offense and defensive numbers for the Panthers, racking up 15 points and a like number of rebounds. “He’s developing into a major contributor,” Coach Leake said of the 6-foot3-inch, 202-pound forward.
Doug Smith also kept up the pressure on the Eagles, pulling down 14 rebounds as he hit six of seven field goal attempts for 12 offensive points.
Coach Gary Leake conceded that Clarke had little trouble breaking Rappahannock’s game plan, a fullcourt press after the basket, but when the Panthers dropped back to their “Plan B,” a half-court trap, the Eagles were snared.
The Rappahannock defense held All-District star Cary Bartlett to eight points. The Eagle standout opened the game with two threepoint shots, but after Coach Leake switched his coverage from Julian Groves to Dunn, Bartlett was held to just two additional points during the balance of the contest.
The change was key, Coach Leake said. “If you allow him open, he’ll score. He’s good all the time, and when he’s open, he’s great.”
