Plan to get 150 to 250 miligrams of the ionophore in each animal per day to improve feed efficiency and rate of gain. On replacement heifers you should not use implants, but ionophores are recommended for replacement heifers.
Broiler litter cuts costs
One of our most under-utilized beef cattle feed resources is broiler litter and this year because of high feed costs in terms of grain and protein supplement, broiler litter looks better than normal. It looks like broiler litter can be transported up to 150 miles from the source and still be very competitive.
Many producers mix deep stacked broiler litter with com silage as it goes into the silo, mixing it about 1,000 lbs. of silage and 400 lbs. broiler litter on a ton basis. Other producers prefer to mix similar amounts of broiler litter with the silage when it comes out of the silo just before feeding.
For wintering calves to put on significant gain, broiler litter and shelled corn can be mixed 50:50 utilizing some five lbs. of hay per head per day in addition.
For cows, 80 percent broiler litter and 20 percent shelled com can be mixed to make up the basic ration, again feeding three to 10 lbs. of hay per day.
