Recycling in Rappahannock continues to roll, gaining momentum as each month passes. The Rappahannock Anti-Litter League and You (RALLY) plans its fourth Community Recycling Day at the county park on Route 211 on Saturday, Dec. 19, from 9-11 a.m.
According to litter coordinator Nina Stamer, the first recycling effort on Sept. 16 reaped 500 pounds of newspapers, 300 pounds of glass and 20 pounds of aluminum cans. The second recycling day in October more than doubled most of the categories, and collected one ton of newspapers.
Although Novembers date was marred by rain, it too was another chapter in the recycling effort’s success story, with nearly 100 households participating.
Mrs. Nina Stamer hopes for a repeat of the first three successes on Saturday, Dec. 17. She reminds residents that the recycling truck will only be parked at the Rec Center for those two hours on Saturday, and that items should not be dropped off at the park either before or after Saturday morning. The truck, supplied by Piedmont Recycling, will leave promptly at 11 a.m.
This month, the recycling center will accept newspapers, aluminum, glass and plastic. Two types of plastic may be recycled, Mrs. Stamer explained. One is containers made of HDPG; such as milk and juice jugs, oil, detergent and bleach bottles, six-pack rings and dish detergent bottles. - —
The center will also accept PETtype plastic, like soda bottles. The colored plastic bases should be removed, however, and sorted with the HDPE plastic.
