said they had a total of seven video cassette recorders, 10 microwave ovens, nine televisions and two telephone answering machines damaged by an apparent surge in power which accompanied the power outage.
Mrs. Miller said every resident she contacted, with the exception of two homes on Mt. Salem Ave. which get power from another feeder line, had some report of damage which they attributed to the power outage.
Frank Hutchinson, who lives just outside the town limits on Route 211 Businesss, told the Rappahannock News that one of his television seta, which was connected though a surge protector, seemed undamaged. However, the wall outlet had scorch 'tnarks around it, and the surge protector and plug on the end of the set’s cord were melted.
Another TV not protected by a surge protector is not working at all, he said. He likened the damage to the power surge caused by a lightning strike, which will also bum out appliances.
At least one office in town reported similar problems with the surge protectors on its computers.
