Burglar sentenced
Carl Joe Wilson Jr., who pleaded guilty last year to felony charges of breaking and entering and grand larceny in connection with the burglary of Phillip Shackleton’s home outside Sperryville in January 1988, was sentenced Monday.
He received a sentence of 10 years in prison on each charge, to be served concurrently, with all but 118 days-suspended. Wilson will be on probation for two years following his release, and will also be subject to random drug screenings.
Commonwealth’s Attorney Peter Luke explained that the sentence was requested to ensure that Wilson spent at least 10 months in jail for the two crimes. He must also pay restitution of $953 to Mr. Shackleton within one year.
Habitual offenders charged
Two men were indicted by the grand jury on .charges of operating a motor vehicle after having been declared habitual offenders.
The habitual offender statute is designed to deal with people who have been repeatedly found guilty of serious driving violations, particularly driving while intoxicated, reckless driving and driving while suspended or revoked. Habitual offenders have their driving privileges revoked for 10 years after conviction. •**>*!*
Samuel Jennings Taylor, 26, of 301 S. Whiting St., Alexandria, and William Paul Spitzer, 31, of 2919 Labella Walk, Falls Church, were charged with the crime after being stopped for traffic violations in separate incidents last year. A check of their driving records through the Department of Motor Vehicles revealed their convictions as habitual offenders, the warrants allege.
