stations from 1950 until retiring in 1977. He was a member and past president of the Front Royal Lions Club and named Lion of the Year in the 1960s. He was awarded a life membership in 1982 and in 1983 was made a key member of the International Association of Lions Clubs. He was a member of the Marlow Heights Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Emma Haynie Smith; five sons, James F. Smith and Leslie R. Smith, both of Front Royal, Robert W. Smith, Culpeper, Thomas 0. Smith, Sacramento, Calif., and Donald L. Smith, Amissville; one brother, 0. Douglas Smith, Warrenton; three sisters, Louise McConchie and Doris Herring, both of Warrenton and Hazel Childress, Fort Washington, Md.; 15 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
The funeral was held Jan. 7 at Turner-Robertshaw Funeral Home in Front Royal with the Rev. Harvey Skinner officiating. Burial was in Shenandoah Memorial Park.
Pallbearers were James F. Smith Jr., John Robert Smith, Michael R. Smith, Leslie C. Smith, Harold D. Smith Jr. and Bryant F. Smith.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Marlow Heights Baptist Church or the Front Royal Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad.
