Steeplechasirjg has continued to be a source of enjoyment and success. Under the direction of Maryland trainer Charles Fenwick, Jr., Arundel’s steeplechase horse, Sugar Bee, was named Timber Horse of the Year in 1985 by the National Steeplechase and Hunt Association.
Today he is an avid fox hunter with the Orange County Hunt. He serves on the Board,of Directors of the General George C. Marshall Foundation, and he is co-founder and past president of the Friends of the National Zoo in Washington, D.C. and the African Wildlife Foundation. *
He is a member of the board of dirctors for the Piedmont Environmental Council.
Four of the five commission members have post graduate degrees; Dixon an MBA from New York University, Pollard a law degree from University of Virginia, Shenefield a law degree from Harvard, and Walters a graduate degree from Benjamin Franklin University in Washington, D.C.
Gov.Balilies emphasized the Arundel’s horses are not flat-track racers; they are foxhunters, timber prospects and steeplechasers. The governor sees no conflict of interest in his appointment.
The commission is charged with selecting sites for race tracks from among applications filed. The final decision on building a track in a particular place will be made only with the approval of the jurisdiction’s voters, which must pass the measure in a referendum. The commission will also oversee operations at race tracks, regulating the industry with an eye toward discouraging the entrance of organized crime into the sport in Virginia.
