“Governor Baliles has appointed a well balanced commission highly competent to address the mandate of the General Assembly to bring parimutuel racing to Virginia,” said Mr. Arundel.
The commission is structured so that members’ terms are staggered from one to five years. M . Shenefield will serve one year, Mr. Walters two, Mr. Dixon three, Mr. Arundel four, and Mr. Pollard five. They will elect a chairman and an executive secretary to oversee day-today activities.
“It would be premature to speculate now on any other aspect of the Commission’s plans or deliberations,” said Mr. Arundel.
Mr. Arundel is president of Arundel Communications, Inc., which publishes a group of newspapers which cover much of Piedmont Virginia, including The Loudoun Times-Mirror, Reston Times, The Fauquier Democrat, Rappahannock News, The Clarke Courier, Herndon Times-Herald, Vienna Times, Eastern Loudoun Times, Front Royal News, and the Centerville Times Courier.
The long-time horseman was the force behind the organization of the Great Meadow Outdoor Foundation, established in 1982. The 540-acre equestrian park outside The Plains was created to provide a permanent home for the Virginia Gold Cup steeplechase and other non-profit open space community events.
Mr. Arundel is chairman of the 64-year-old Virginia Gold Cup race meeting and a founding director of the Virginia Steeplechasing Association.
