Is current compensation adequate? The preceding paragraph provides the answer. Besides being “in the nation’s upper-income class ... a plain statistical fact,” according to Vincent Carroll, there are also the non-salary benefits and the nonmonetary returns. These include free travel and generous expense accounts, widespread ffespect and honor, fame (often national), great publicity, wide contacts and connections which almost guarantee a good job for those few members who do leave Congress. Coupled with these “perks,” current compensation is adequate.
Then there is the matter of performance. It is not easy for voters to judge a member’s overall contribution. Fortunately, for this purpose it is unnecessary. The proposed increase will apply to all members, so
