Quiet but not secret
Responding to charges that plans for a new county library were developed in secrecy, Trustee William Young told the supervisors, “There really hasn’t been any intent to be secretive. But we’ve moved quietly, I suppose.”
At its meetings, the Friends of the Library has been discussing possibilities for a new building for two years, he noted. Representatives of this large group, which has an open membership, have “talked to every landowner we could think of in and around town who might be willing to sell us or give us land,” Dr. Young said.
The Friends found no one willing to donate land and only two property owners willing to sell, both at prices too high to be feasible, he added. “There is no way we can expand at the current site,” Dr. Young repeated, pointing out that the church lot is in the middle of a residential area where providing adequate parking presents an “insurmountable problem.”
Currently, the Library Board of Trustees is interviewing architects and hopes to have a preliminary design and site plan to submit to the Planning Commission by the end of March, Dr. Young said. Funds on hand are sufficient to cover initial architectural fees. “We won’t be in need of more cash until this fall,” he apprised the board. He estimated the start of construction to be a year away and the completion two years distant.
