LEESBURG — Gov. L. Douglas Wilder reiterated his stand against raising taxes in the face of an expected $2 billion budget shortfall during a Dec. 14 interview with the Editorial Board of Arundel Newspapers, but backed away froift plans to shift a greater cost burden to local government.
“No, I won’t have to raise taxes. I will resist any efforts to do that by the legislature. I don’t see the need for it at this time,” Gov. Wilder said in a discussion with the Rappahannock News and other reporters and editors of Arundel Newspapers in Leesburg lastFriday.
In wide-ranging remarks, Gov. Wilder reiterated a campaign stand that while he favors construction of a western bypass around D.C., there won’t be funds to build it in the foreseeable future.
“I would urge that it be done as soon as possible too, but the question is what’s possible. You still have the lack of money. I hate to keep going back to the recurring theme, but it’s there: Where is the money?” said the governor.
