Frank Pearl of Huntly and Willie C. Smith Jr. of Amissville have been elected to membership in the American Angus Association, according to Dick Spader, the organization’s executive vice-president.
In addition, Mr. Pearl, the owner of Chancellors Rock Farm, enrolled in the Angus Herd Improvement Program sponsored by the association.
Mr. Spader explained that the Herd Improvement Records are used by registered Angus breeders to help them keep records of reproduction and growth rates of individual animals. “Every year, hundreds of Angus breeders use AHIR records to produce more profitable, efficient Angus seedstock,” he said.
The program provides a standardized schedule of weighing each calf, which allows breeders to identify the cattle that grow the fastest and most efficiently, and also to identify cows that regularly produce above average calvefi) as well as the bulls that sired them.
The American Angus Association began the program in 1957, becoming the first beef herd organization to offer its members a production records program. Today, Association members report more than 300,000 birth, weaning and yearling weights through the program.
