recommends that whole language be extended throughout the elementary school, that more electives be added at the high school, that a kitchen be provided for special education students, that up-to-date textbooks in social studies that reflect recent changes in the world be adopted, that substitutes and parent aides receive training, and that money be set aside for repair of computers.
Under physical plant, Mr. Futtrell said the teachers recommend that the softball field be finished at the high school, that lights be provided for the parking lots at both schools, that another telephone be provided at both schools, that heating and ventilation be improved at both schools, and that more attention be put on cleaning and maintenance at both schools, including painting the ceilings.
In the area of salaries and benefits, the teachers asked for at least a two percent cost of living increase, or to have the school system pick up the teacher’s five percent contribution to the retirement system. They also asked for increases at the top steps of the salary scale and for an increase in the masters’ degree supplement. Finally they asked that classified employees be given a salary scale with step increases.
During the in-service portion of the meeting, fifth and sixth-grade reading teacher Margaret Lee told the School Board how she had implemented whole language and cooperative learning in her reading program.
