If there is any consolation to be gained from the start of the Rappahannock Panthers’ basketball season, it is that back-to-back losses to Luray don’t count in the district standings.
Adding insult to injury, the Bulldogs snapped 3 2 1/2 year, 56-game losing streak at the Panthers’ expense, beating Rappahannock in their home opener on Dec. 8, by a 71-62 margin. The following Tuesday, Rappahannock traveled across , the mountain for a rematch in Luray, and the Bulldogs again won, 7563.
, Against George Mason on Dec. 14, Rappahannock finally pulled together a winning performance, beating the Mustangs easily, 65-46. The Panthers were led by team captain James Roy, who rolled up 21 offensive points. Teammate Bobby Jenkins added another 16, and Jason Butler and Jason Henry contributed an additional nine points each.
Butler led the Panther offense in the season opener, scoring 29 points, the team high total for the season. But the Bulldogs shut him off in their second meeting, holding the senior guard to just five points.
Against Clarke County on Tuesday, however, the Panthers again lacked offensive coordination, with only Jason Butler (16) and Paul Hitt (11) in double figures. And the team’s inside game, which made the difference against the Mustangs with better than 40 points, added only 11 points against the Eagles.
“Our strength in that first victory — our inside game — was our •weakness last night,” Coach Leake said Wednesday morning. Against George Mason, “we had a real balanced scoring attack, with everyone feeding the inside man.” In Berry - ville, Hitt and Butler “played real well, but we just didn’t get the team effort.”
