classes, and that each class had made a bid book for the use of the younger grades. She said that three days a week her students read books selected from the library. They are expected to keep a journal of their reading and to write letters to each other or to her about what they are reading.
She said the program was very inexpensive to implement, because the students are using books already in the library and provide their own spiral-bound notebooks for the reading journals. She said the program takes more of her time in evaluation because part of each student’s grade is determined in an evaluation conference with the student, but that less of her time is spent running off ditto sheets.
“I have found the whole language reading workshop fantastic,” Mrs. Lee said. “The children are increasing their reading vocabularies, they are becoming more discriminating readers, and they are learning to love to read.”

• approved the senior class trip to Seven Springs Ski Resort.
• appointed David Hunter as track coach.
• learned that the repairs to the roof over the auditorium were finished last week.

The Board of Directors of Allegheny Power System, Inc., declared a quarterly dividend of 79 cents a share on the common stock. The dividend is payable on Dec. 28 to stockholders of record at the close of business on Dec. 14.
