While the English teacher encouraged the students to write letters “to make a GI laugh”, the students took their task with seriousness and concern.
“There was absolutly no joking with any of the students. It was very serious.” Mr. Heddleston the letters were personal, unread by faculty and mailed at the end of the day.
Some of the students wrote to service members, some wrote to names of personnel obtained from a list which appeared in an earlier edition of the Rappahannock News. “One girl even brought in the addresses for the Marines and the Army personnel,” Mr. Heddleston explained.
“They are very serious about the matter,” he,repeated, adding the students are not “naive or foolish and the things they repeat about the war are as accurate as the news reports,” he said. “They seemed to be informed” and are demonstrating “very patriotic feelings” with full
