Away from the lime-light and TV cameras, in smoke filled rooms, the Democrats admit they don’t like Gov. Wilder’s budget. Yet like cows being lead to the slaughter, these same Democrats in the House of Delegates follow the “Dukakis of Virginia” to the chopping block. Governor Wilder was quoted in the Friday Richmond Times Dispatch that he would “have to raise taxes” to balance the state budget. The “shell-game,” smoke and mirrors, and public deception continues.
The budget passed the House with a 64 yea and 34 nay vote, a first in the last 12 years that the budget wasn’t just rubber stamped. This budget, as passed by the Democratically controlled House, is fiscal suicide and mandates local tax increases to maintain educational effort.
Opportunities to make real cuts in state government were placed on the table just to be chopped up and discarded. The most significant growth was in adding more state personnel to the pay roll. If the personnel growth proposed in the budget could have been stopped, there
