The Rappahannock High Panthers varsity basketball team dropped its season opener at Luray last Friday in a one-sided contest, 73-52.
Although Luray led by only two points at the end of the first quarter, nine Rappahannock turnovers in the second quarter and poor shooting allowed the home team to widen their margin to 12 by the half.
Luray guard Craig Tutt, a junior, “took the game into his own hands,” according to Panthers Coach Gary Leake, scoring 31 points. He was 7-for-8 from the field in the second half.
Rappahannock shot only 34 percent from the field and was 3for-12 at the free-throw stripe. Forward Michael Williams’ 22 points and 17 rebounds wasn’t enough for Rappahannock to make up for a total of 12 missed lay-ups.
Also scoring for the Panthers were Kevin Jolliffe, 10 points, and James Roy, 9.
“Seventy-five percent of an offense is getting high percentage shots,” said Coach Leake, and when the lay-ups weren’t going in the Panthers fell behind.
