system was considering adding new bus routes to relieve overcrowding. Dr. Gangel said that there was a team studying transportation needs that would report in time for its rec-' ommendations to be included in the budget.
Dr. Gangel told the board news from Richmond is not good for this year’s budget. He said he had first been told to expect a loss of about 5 percent in sales tax revenues. That would amount to about $23,000, he said. He added that this week he had been told that might be a 5.7 percent decrease, or about $28,000. He said he could handle such a cut without major cuts in spending, but was concerned that the cut could grow.
He added that if the state would reimburse the school system for the increased enrollment, it would more than make up for the cuts, but said the Department of Education had indicated it might not be able to pay its share to fund the Standards of Quality, based on the enrollment the state had projected, much less the increased enrollment. He said he would not know finally about funding for this year’s budget until after the General Assembly meets and takes action in March.
The board also learned that average daily enrollment has continued to grow. It was 994 in November, compared to 991 in September. The board also learned that recent rains have shown there are new leaks in roofs, one at the elementary school and two at the high school. Mr. Chappell will work with suppliers to get the roofs fixed.
