obligation bonds through the Virginia Public School Authority. Such bonds most recently sold for a 6.2 percent interest rate, he said.
The board also voted unanimously to allow Dr. Gangel to apply for a grant through the New American School Development Corporation. That organization, part of President Bush’s America 2000 education plan, wili use foundations to provide funding for about 20 very innovative schools nationwide. Dr. Gangel said there was a “minute likelihood” the county could get funding for the middle school from this source. He added that going through the grant process would help the school system “solidify ideas” for the school.
During the part of the meeting set aside for the public to make suggestions for the upcoming school budget. Cecelia Dennis asked if something could be done about the fact that the gym showers run out of hot water.
Assistant Superintendent Robert Chappell noted that there is only hot water when the furnace is running. School Board Chairman Beverly Massie noted that the school has been receiving coal with rocks in it. The rocks have been causing auger in the furnace to break, she said.
