The Rappahannock Library’s First Friday Series presents “Facing Tough Challenges: Russia Today” at 8 p.m. this coming Friday. The speaker will be local resident and career diplomat Jon Purnell, who has just returned from Russia following three years as Deputy Principle Officer at the Consulate General in St. Petersburg.
While there, Mr. Purnell witnessed the many changes that occurred as the former Soviet Union dissolved and the Russian people began moving toward greater freedom and democracy. As an officer at the Consulate General, he traveled to the Baltic States while they fought for independence.
Mr. Purnell plans to illustrate his talk with slides, and is most interested in answering any and all questions the audience may have regarding life in the former Soviet Union and the challenges facing the Russian people today.
The program begins at 8 p.m. in the Library’s meeting room, with refreshments to follow. Admission is free.
