There were humor; pathos that brought tears; human dreams, kindness and persistence; a happy ending that left viewers uplifted, hopeful, smiling.
Afterwards we thought: wouldn’t it be wonderful if most TV fare were like that, showing more of humanity’s good side, the kindness, selflessness and innate decency of people? Wouldn’t our national character today be better,if we’d seen more such “shows” over the past 40 years?
Is this a call for censorship? No!
It is a call for responsibility in exercising (»ur freedoms: what to produce, what to watch. It won’t be easy. Trashy shows make money for producers. Viewers are in the habit of watching them. Switching from sweets to fruits and vegetables, knowing it is healthy and right, takes lots of will power. Changing TV will be as difficult.
Why don’t Rappahannock County’s TV and movie viewers make a New Year’s resolution: stop watching trashy shows? We’re a small county with few people; yet even a tiny pebble tftssed into a farm pond makes ripples that reach the entire shore. For our children’s and country’s future health, let’s make a start.
