I got back to the U.S. from a dozen day trip to Europe on Christmas Eve and saw the big headlines announcing that a Rich mond judge had prohibited Governor L. Douglas Wilder from firing Attorney General Mary Sue Terry as counsel for the Virginia Retire'*ment System.
I must admit that Virginia politics wasn’t a subject of discussion during my visits to Germany, Austria, Hungary, Italy and Switzerland. The only manifestation of the subject during my entire stay was the few people who asked me about Doug Wilder when they learned I was from Virginia.
They knew about Wilder only because he had been the first black governor ever elected and because he has briefly mounted a campaign for President. One of the persons I spoke with had once visited Williamsburg and been fascinated by the pottery factory.
But now that my vacation is over and a new year beckons, it is time again to face up to reality: lots of old* business will spill over into 1993.
