The School Board selected VMDO Architects of Charlottesville to design the elementary school addition for kindergarten through second grade at Tuesday’s meeting.
The school system received 15 proposals from architectural firms in response to its ad requesting bids. After a special meeting May 17 a board committee recommended four of the firms for further consideration. Those four firms made presentations at a another meeting of the committee May 26, and the members selected VMDO as first choice. School officials have spent the past two weeks reviewing the references of the firm, visiting schools VMDO designed and talking with personnel at those schools and contractors that worked with the firm.
Following the vote Tuesday night the school system will try to negotiate a contract with VMDO to design the school. School Superintendent David Gangel said he expects the process of working out a contract to take about two weeks. In the meantime, he said, a committee of school and community people can begin work planning for the addition with representatives of the architectural firm joining “perhaps on an hourly basis.”
