“It’s legal to kill a bear only if it’s a danger or threat to human life,” said Bankston. “Occasional bears are not a threat. You can face possible legal action for killing a bear,” he added.
If a bear becomes an on-going problem night after night, “call me, and we’ll set a trap,” he said. “I hope I don’t get a lot of calls. Despite common beliefs, bears rarely carry rabies,” he added.
The bear killed in Gid Brown Hollow was attracted by nearby stores of food and animal feed, and not by the animals, Bankston explained. He did not know if it was searching for a mate.
