SEN. BYRD: “Republicans? Utter nonsense. They hold their conventions in phone booths.”
ME: “Not any more. They’re havng a convention in Richmond with 13,000 to 14,000 delegates expected. Your good friend former Gov. Mills Godwin will be there.”
SEN. BYRD: “What on earth for?”
ME: “Why he’s been a Republican since he was elected governor for a second time in 1973. Virginia has gone Republican in every presidential election since 1964. Times have really changed.”
SEN. BYRD: “They certainly have. When I was in charge of the state, Republicans couldn’t get elected dogcatcher except in some of the mountain-valley areas. Who do we have in the United States Senate these days, a place where I served so long.”
ME: “You have John Warner, a Republican, who won the seat in 1978 while he was married to Elizabeth Taylor.”
SEN. BYRD: “The actress?”
ME: “Yes. That was just a few years before Ronald Reagan became President.”
SEN. BYRD: “Ronald Reagan, the actor. Why he was a liberal Democrat when I knew him.”
ME: “He was a very conservative Republican when he got elected. Your son, Harry Jr., praised him highly.”
