sponse to problems associated with the roofing firm at the elementary school last month and partly because construction on the elementary school addition will be taking place while school is in session next year.
Richard Smith has been appointed to work part time as an administrative assistant. Mr. Smith teaches sixth grade. Next year he will spend about 60 percent of his time in the classroom and about 40 percent working in administration.
He will begin his administrative duties this summer and start by tackling policies relating to “student emergency procedures, construction materials management, repair and warranty material management, pesticides and herbicide management and radon management.”
Dr. Gangel said he hopes those policies will be reviewed before school starts next fall. There is an even longer list of related policies to be reviewed during the school year. Dr. Gangel said Mr. Smith will be involving parents in community representatives in his reviews. “We need to work with parents to develop alternative plans” for when school is dismissed early, he said.
The board also approved offering a class in Advanced Placement U.S. History starting next year. Students w ill be able to earn college credit for this course if they score high enough on an AP exam, Dr. Gangel said.
