SEN. BYRD: “And who’s the other Senator? Is he a Democrat?”
ME: “Yes. Charles S. Robb, who is a Democrat and a former governor. He had some problems involving parties at Virginia Beach and alleged illegal taping, but that appears to be behind him now.
“Even so, Gov. Wilder may challenge him for the senatorial nomination. That would give former Marine Col. Ollie North of Iran-Contra fame a good chance to get the Republican nomination and win. I won’t even try to explain what IranContra was all about.”
SEN. BYRD: “I would give anything to be able to attend one more shad planking and get the inside story about state politics. Who was the guest speaker this year?”
ME: “Gov. Wilder. And, of course, Mary Sue Terry and many other women were there.”
SEN. BYRD: “You’re right, everything has changed. The only tradition we probably have left is the proud oneofVMI.”
ME: “I don’t think you’ll want me to get into that.”
