Teachers at the county schools are developing a variety of strategies for coping with missed school days.
Twenty-two days have been missed from school so far this year. Ten are scheduled to be made up in a one-day instead of six-day spring vacation and an extra week of school in June. The school system has not made a final decision on the other 12 days, but last week the School Board decided to see how many the state would allow them to drop based on having a longer school day than the minimum.
Many elementary school teachers said when the missed days began piling up they started sending notes home outlining the work they hoped to accomplish. They said parents have been very cooperative in seeing that the children do some school work during days missed.
Kindergarten teacher Sherry Marquand said in kindergarten time is most important in the first half of the year when the children to get “adjusted” to school “and we had that.”
