Town Hall Use
One More Time

There was a heated discussion at the Washington Town Council last week regarding public use of the Town Hall.
Town Treasurer Brad Fisher distributed a two page policy to be used for renting the Town Hall. Copies were provided to members of the council, and one copy for the audience to pass around for perusal.
Council member Janice Moffett said, “I do not want to think about living on this street and having the Town Hall in constant use. Parking could be a problem.”
Council member Ray Gooch replied, “The council sitting at the time applications are received would look at them case by case. The building would probably not be used more than once or twice a month.”
Mr. Fisher said, “If we do get complaints, then we can change it.”
Council member Mark Bailey brought up the subject of placing a time limit, or curfew, on those renting the Town Hall. Ms. Moffett commented that though the coffeehouse which RAAC sponsored last month was not a noisy affair, she could hear car doors slam when people were leaving, between 1 and 2 a.m.
Skippy Giles and Council member Newbill Miller both voiced disagreement about allowing alcoholic beverages to be consumed in the Town Hall.
Mayor Dean Morehouse said, “We should have a limit of 11 p.m. dining the week and 1 a.m. for Friday, Saturday and Sunday. I do not think a strict prohibition is the right answer. It (intended use of alcoholic beverages) should be disclosed to the Town Council at the time of the application to rent the Town Hall.”
Town resident Diane Bruce said, “The problem with the case by case basis is if you allow it one time.
