her. So, Digit suddenly had a new /home.
She was a mangy, 42-pound dog, pitiful to look at, and was named after one of Dian Fossey’s gorillas, from the, movie Gorillas in the Mist. After taking her to a doggy beauty parlor for “the works,” Mrs. Kevis took her to the vet to be looked over.
Mrs. Kevis wanted to have her spayed, but the vet informed her that it was too late. Within a month, puppies were due. 1
Three and half weeks later, Digit gave birth to 11 puppies, nine of which lived. Homes were found for all of them. “We were very determined to find homes for them. All of the puppies are now about five years old, and they are all big and stupid |nd very friendly,” said Mrs. Kevis. Most of them weigh about 95 pounds. Digit weighs 75 pounds now. Johnny Ray Pullen calls Digit his best success story.
Though Digit is not expected to ever be 100 percent healthy again, she will probably be able to walk after at least six weeks of rest and relaxation. Mrs. Kevis said, “We hope this means there will be no more Indy 500’s in the backyard.”
Mrs. Kevis has graciously offered a dog biscuit recipe. She often makes these for Digit.
2 cups whole wheat flour
2 cups com lkieal
1 cup Parmesan cheese
3/4 cup oil or fat
1/2 cup broth 1
2 or 3 eggs
Dash maple syrup
Combine all ingredients and mix well. Roll to 1/2 inch. Cut out with cookie cutters (bone shapes are nice). Place on greased cookie sheets. Bake at 300 degrees for 45 minutes.
