The two residents running for Town Treasurer, Louise van Dort and Tom Zumwalt, were interviewed this week in order to dismiss their qualifications and goals.
Louise van Dort, a resident of the town for eight years, lists her goals as follows:
• Work harmoniously with the council towards the preservation and enhancement, through orderly growth, of the unique residential environment of the town.
• Support, protect, and enforce the Town ordinances as enacted by the previous council as representing the voice of the residents in the town.
• Support a serious and vigorous effort towards a viable sewer disposal plan to be accomplished without assessing additional property or business taxes.
• Participate and support a continuing effort towards recycling efforts and goals as mandated by the state and county.
• Support forcefully any possible effort to induce the power and telephone companies to bury their lines, at their expense, wherever possible.
• Support our volunteer fire and rescue squads to the fullest extent under our fiscal policies.
Ms. van Dort claims that as treasurer she would “first and foremost continue the fiscal approach as charted...by our present treasurer Brad Fisher.” She promises to “administer the Town’s assets in the most rigorous conservative fashion.” She is fully computer literate.
Ms. van Dort has worked on many volunteer projects in the town. She worked on the complete renovation of the Town Hall (the old library), and used people from the Sheriff’s Department “trusty program” in order to do the work.
With help from Planning Commission members, John McCarthy, Mayor Dean Morehouse, Ray Gooch, and Frank Reynolds, she was responsible for the re-writing and production of the Comprehensive Plan, and the Zoning, Sub-Division and Historic District Ordinances for the Town.
She has been administrative assistant, in a volunteer capacity, to the town for the last three years, and has attended nearly all Town Council meetings for the past four years.
Ms. van Dort has been a member of the Town Planning Commission since 1988 and served as its chairman from 1900 to 1994.
