Perhaps most unusual of all (and appropriate for families needing a good vacation) is the donation by Diana and Lee Bird of a week at their 17th-century captain’s house in Martha’s Vineyard.

The market rate for such a house would be $2,000 a week. It sleeps eight and is situated on 10 acres. A well-stocked library, great children’s playground and restaurants are all within walking distance. A private beach is within biking distance.
“Come to our auction for any reason whatsoever-to taste our free wine and beer, sample our free hors d’oeuvres, to browse through the hundreds of donated items—or even, maybe, to bid on something,” suggested Ms. Cadwalader.
“We’re offering something for every pocketbook. We have Ben and Jerry’s Peace Pops, we have crafts, we have a 1978 Chevrolet,” she added.
Bethany Craig, head of Spring Mountain School, says the money raised by the auction will be applied toward scholarships and sending the school’s three teachers for training this summer at accredited Waldorf institutions.
“One of us will be at school in New Hampshire, another in Maine and a third in California, if all goes as planned,” said Mrs. Craig.
‘The Waldorf approach to children is magical-it opens them to their tremendous inner resourcesbut it’s only as good as the teachers are,” said Mrs. Craig. ‘We want our teachers to be as knowledgeable, insightful and skillful as the best Waldorf teachers anywhere. Our kids deserve no less.”
