Tom Zumwalt, a two-year resident of the Town of Washington, moved here from the Washington, D.C. area. He was employed by the State Department and Corps of Engineers, and was in charge a multimillion dollar budget and awarded contracts.
From 1989 to 1992 Mr. Zumwalt was in charge of urban design for the Rosslyn Renaissance, a public-private non-profit organization which worked to fix up Rosslyn.
One of Mr. Zumwalt’s major goals is to have more people in town participate in the town government. “I hope to have more people involved. I think the elected officials owe the citizens of the town their respect and should listen to them.”
Mr. Zumwalt would also like to see the streetscape cleaned up around town, including sidewalks. He said that maybe the town could get money from the state to do this.
1 “I would like to see the ARB and historic preservation groups become chartered or incorporated because we will have to face development here in the next 10 or 15 years. We could face having strip shopping centers,” said Mr. Zumwalt. “Also, I would like to get in with the National Trust and their Main Street program. If we do not get these things organized we might get bulldozed over by developers. The people in the town should have some say in their future.”
Regarding a sewer system for the town, Mr. Zumwalt believes that needs for the town need to be determined by the people in town. “It should be considered at town meetings. Maybe we should have a referendum.”
Mr. Zumwalt is proprietor of an interior design company, and resides on Main Street.
