On the other side of the legislature, Sen. Hunter B. Andrews, DHampton, told the committee that he thinks rushing into approving Sen. Bell’s bill would lead to chaos before a study is completed.
“This may be an excellent, fine idea, Sen. Andrews said. “But by adopting it as a statute you’re putting the cart before the horse.”
The senators agreed, recommending the bill go to a joint study commission.
Higher Education
Three of Virginia’s former governors issued a statement to members of the General Assembly requesting the return of funding to the state’s colleges and universities.
Business leaders and university officials are aggressively lobbying legislators to allocate $98 million to higher education.
The ex-governors — Mills E. Godwin Jr., Linwood Holton and Gerald Baliles — said the current economic growth in Virginia is due in large part to the educational infrastructure the state has carefully built.
