Allen's Cuts
Shortsighted
To the Editor:
I am a college student living in Rappahannock County. I am surprised and deeply dismayed by the compromises Governor Allen is proposing to make masked as a charade of tax cutting.
Already thousands of Virginians are up in arms about the effects these spending cuts will have on the children’s lives and opportunities.
Gov. Allen is cutting 90 percent of Social Services but increasing funding for prisons: good thing, people will probably be in need of housing. He is cutting funding for operating county offices but mandating the salaries. Where will the money come from? Probably improvement on any level will have to be trimmed or forgone, trying to make ends meet. He even wants to cut funding for registration of voters.
This makes no sense.
Worst, he is cutting funding for education. Education is the one measure a person can take to get ahead in this society. It helps them grow, gain employment, change their current situation, have some control over where their lives go and even help those around them. He seems to believe increasing prison funding is more important. Why would anyone ever take any money away from education on any level? 1 cannot think of one reason.
Besides being deeply offended, 1 am very hurt, directly because of these budget cuts (between 401 to 65 million being cut for higher education) a new program that l was interested in, at Radford University, had to be dropped.
