Williams Grocery 1n Chester Gap is a welcome sight to many hikers of the Appalachian Trail.
“We’re on the map,” said Marilyn Williams, who owns and runs the store along with her husband Buck. She said that summer and fall are when most of the hikers stop by their store, and one of them told her that the store was on his hiking map.
Mrs. Williams said that the hikers come off the Trail and follow a fire road to_ Route 610 above the store, then follow Route 610 down to U.S. 522, head north', and catch up with another portion of the Trail further down the road.
“They are very interesting people who come here. We have had people who have hiked the entire trail by hiking a portion at a time. We had one fellow come by last fall on a very chilly day. He had only been in our country three weeks and he was hiking the trail by himself.” She said
