Seventy-six percent of the 3,833 eligible voters turned out for the state and local elections.
Spurred by the hotly contested race for county sheriff, Sperryville led the county when 84 percent of eligible voters cast ballots. Chester Gap trailed the rest of the county with 70 percent voting.
The high 1995 turnout compares favorably with 1991 when 70 percent of eligible voters cast ballots. That election also featured a race for sheriff, contests for state senate and an election to replace French Slaughter in the U.S. House of Representatives won by George Allen.
A high point in voting occurred the following year when 88 percent of county voters cast ballots in the 1992 Presidential election.
With a true contest for sheriff, only one write-in ballot for Jesse Reynolds was cast, but the other contests for constitutional officers with no ballot opposition attracted several. For commonwealth’s attorney Doug Baumgardner got one vote, as did Frank Reynolds, John Holmes and Robert Shapiro. Dave Konick got four write-in votes:
Linda Lovelace and Shylock each got one write-in vote for treasurer. Pat Davis, Dr. Doo Little, and Della Street each got one write-in vote for commissioner of the revenue. Lavonne Lee got two votes and Mollie Welch got four.
In board of supervisor contests, Jackson and Wakefield districts, where there was ballot opposition, did not attract write-in votes, but the three supervisors with no challengers did. In Hampton District B. Lee Bird, S. Bryant Lee and Newbill Miller had one vote each, and Hodge Miller had two.
In Piedmont District, Santa Claus, Goofy, Carson B. Johnson, Tommy Bruce and Kevin Weisgerber each had one vote. Gray Armistead, Alson Atkins and Randolph Clater had two each.
In Stonewall-Hawthorn District Hiram Delpouper, Donald Duck, Phillip Terrell, H.B. Wood Jr. and John Henry Woodward had one vote each. Frank Warner had four.
The school board election produced only two write-in votes: Beverly Massie in Jackson District and Nelson P. Lane in Stonewall-Hawthom District.
