The third major facet of the Friends 2 Mom program is a one-onone mentoring program with members of the group who are themselves mothers.
Mrs. Heddleston said the group has worked at least some with six or seven girls. Mrs. Wood said only one has gone fully through the childbirth classes.'
The group sometimes has an excess of provisions, such as baby formula that is about to expire, and in that case they share with the SAFE house in Culpeper or crisis pregnancy programs in other areas.
Mrs. Heddleston said at the first meeting the girl receives a special Bible and other Christian literature to provide support. From that point on the program is geared to what the pregnant teen needs. Mrs. Heddleston said the group is prepared to help a girl if she should choose to have her baby adopted, but Rappahannock girls invariably choose to keep their babies. She said most of the girls receive support from their own mothers who usually take care of the baby once it is bom so the mother can finish school.
