Friends 2 Mom is a fairly new program in the county for helping pregnant teen-aged girls who have decided to continue their pregnancies.
The program got its start when April Heddleston heard through a church meeting about how such a program was working in other areas and got together with some of her friends from various Christian denominations to see if such a program could work in Rappahannock County.
The group spent nine jo 10 months developing guidelines and decided to concentrate on three major areas. The first is a maternity and baby closet located in the basement of Reynolds Memorial Baptist Church. There are maternity clothes, baby clothes for children up to three and furniture such as cribs and car seats.
The second thrust of the program is free childbirth education available at the girl’s convenience taught byDiane Wood. This ideally starts with a meeting early in the pregnancy to talk about good health habits during pregnancy and later classes to prepare the girl for he birth.
